Interfacing a high performance disk array file server to a gigabit LAN

چکیده
Distributed systems in use today depend heavily on network communications between clients and servers. In this report, we describe the design and implementation of the network architecture (hardware, software and protocols) of the RAID-II system. RAID-II is a high speed file server connected to an UltraNetwork. To support high bandwidth network transfers with the RAID-II server, we divided the networking software among the various processors in the system. With the distributed software, the CPU still limits the RAID-II file server to 21Mbytes/second of data bandwidth on our network.

An Architecture for Opportunistic Network File System Services
Disk drives are widely cited as a critical bottleneck in systems performance. This is particularly true of notebook computers, which are significantly constrained in their power consumption and their limited size. Bound by these physical constraints we can expect disk drives to become an increasingly problematic component of home and business class computers. In contrast, high speed wireless an...
متن کاملNetwork Support for Network-Attached Storage
While many storage products are directly attached to personal computers, most disk array products (65% and rising) are deployed in local area network file servers. This centralization of storage resources enables effective sharing, better administrative control and less redundancy. However, it also increases dependence on network and file server performance. With the emergence of high-performan...
متن کاملThe Global File System: A File System for Shared Disk Storage
In this paper we present a new storage architecture for clusters that creates a shared memory of disk storage that is uniformly accessible to all cluster clients, scales to large capacity, and provides very high performance and connectivity. The cluster structure resembles a symmetric multiprocessor (SMP) in that clients (processors) can access disk data (memory) across a local area network lik...

We describe the implementation of a large scale disk array controller and subsystem incorporating over 100 high performance 3.5" disk drives. It is designed to provide 40 MB/s sustained performance and 40 GB capacity in three 19" racks. The array controller forms an integral part of a file server that attaches to a Gb/s local area network. The controller implements a high bandwidth interconnect...

No current solution fully addresses read latency TIP to reduce latency • exploits high-level hints that don't violate modularity • converts throughput to latency Preliminary TIP test results As processor performance gains continue to outstrip Input/Output gains, I/O performance is becoming critical to overall system performance. File read latency is the most significant bottleneck for high perf...
